The registration process with the Irish Medical Council for any doctor looking to work in Ireland can be a tedious process like anything else, when you don’t know how to go about it.

Firstly, any doctor looking to work in Ireland must register with the Irish Medical Council, there is no exceptions. The Irish Medical Council is an independent regulatory body for doctors practicing medicine in Ireland and have the final say as to whether you are eligible for registration or not. This will depend on whether or not your Medical Degree is recognised by the standards and protocols they follow.

Generally, If you are an EU/EEA graduate, you can expect to obtain registration within 6-8 weeks from the date the Irish Medical Council receive your documents for review and not the date you submit them.

For non-EU/EEA graduates this process is generally considerably longer due to the fact that document checks and training must be checked manually by a member of the registration team.  In some cases, you may be required to sit the PRES exam which is conducted in Ireland under the supervisions of the Irish Medical Council at a set location.

Once you have registered and completed your contact details, you will need to apply for either general registration or specialist registration depending on qualifications. You will note that the documents which will be required from you will need to be translated (if original is not in English) and notarised by an official notary. If you do not complete this process your documents will be returned to you and you will go to the bottom of the queue again in terms of having your documents examined and authorised by a member of the registration team.
